Empowering Others—How and Why

Empowering Others—How and Why

by
Rachel Bullock
Going from individual contributor to manager can be daunting for many reasons, but I think the one I struggled with the most at first was this: If I’m no longer a Project Manager completing projects on time, on target, and under budget, how will I know if I’m succeeding? How will my boss know that I’m doing a good job? It took a while for this to sink in—and even longer for me to stop struggling against it—but by growing our company from five employees to 45, by helping Render Media become one of the fastest-growing media companies in the country, I finally realized I am successful when others are successful; I am doing a good job by empowering others to do a good job. And you can too.

30 years ago, there weren’t many choices for watching video content out there. You’d have maybe a handful of channels on TV, or you’d go see a movie. Fast forward to the present, and there are millions of video options out there on the Internet. An average American spends roughly 118 minutes per day on social media, and most of that goes to video-hosting platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram. So there’s a lot of competition for your (the viewer’s) eyes.

Why the Concerns over Facebook’s Video Metrics are Overstated

Why the Concerns over Facebook’s Video Metrics are Overstated

Facebook collects data on 100% of viewers - cable TV collects data on 0.02%. There has been a lot of press recently around the accuracy of Facebook's video metrics. There are questions around measurement criteria such as 'What counts as a video view?' and 'Which views count toward the completion rate?' Some press and media outlets have questioned the value of these viewers and, more importantly, the validity of the data around these users. I believe these claims against new video platforms like Facebook and YouTube are dramatically overstated. “Concerns” about the accuracy and validity of viewers on digital platforms seem more like fear, uncertainty, and doubt that Cable TV providers are casting against the newcomers because their industry is threatened rather than true concerns around the metrics.

There are two ways to build a startup: you either raise a lot of money, or you take a small amount of money, find a small, loyal team and you bootstrap. We chose to bootstrap our business, and as a new CEO, I adopted a hands-on approach to leadership. Being a hands-on CEO means putting in the extra effort to learn alongside your employees, to roll up your sleeves and take on tasks you normally wouldn’t consider tackling given your title.

I just hired our 25th employee. I have every confidence in the world Avery will contribute to the success of our company, work well with the team, and grow in her career. How do I know? Avery Archie is a graduate of our Intern Program. I started Render Media’s Intern Program in the summer of 2012, back when we had just a handful of employees. Today 40% of our full-time staff interned with us first. They all hold meaningful roles and have been some of the greatest contributors to our wins thus far. We have been able to promote from within thanks to our program, a huge source of pride for our staff. Several of our employees who started as interns are now in executive or management roles at Render, including our Director of Business Development, Aryeh Kluger, and our Senior Editor, Leanne Hall.

Liberals will tell you that Guns Kill. Conservatives will tell you that Guns Protect and Save Innocent Lives. Opposing Views will present both sides of this national issue to you. We do that by sharing the story of a senseless shooting death that impacted a community, and another one about a gun that ultimately saved an innocent person's life. Five years ago we acquired a fledgling news property called Opposing Views. As we refined the mission, and focused on content, Opposing Views began to grow. We paid close attention to how our users interacted with the content, and we found that certain story types tended to perform better on social media than others. We tracked the data: Articles with real people’s stories behind them perform 30 percent better than stories about bill, law or regulation.

Now is the Best Time in History to be a Publisher

Now is the Best Time in History to be a Publisher

When you imagine the newsrooms of traditional media organizations, you might think of a conference room filled with young, hungry journalists pitching ideas to a mature editor who had spent years working his way up the ranks. Or perhaps you think of an Editor-in-Chief walking over to the pit early in the morning, assigning today's stories to the up-and-coming writers. Render Media is one of the fastest-growing publishers on the planet, and none of that happens at our company. Publishers like us who were born in the age of real-time metrics don't go by gut; we go by data. The numbers tell us if a story is interesting, if a topic is shareable, if a user will click. We are focused on telling the best stories we can, fueled by hundreds of data-driven decisions every day. We use these data to select daily stories, choose the best formats to tell those stories, and determine the right time and (electronic) place to deliver those stories.

Yesterday, Viacom publicly announced a partnership with SnapChat. Viacom - whose biggest and most well known assets include Nickelodeon and MTV are now putting up content and selling ads on SnapChat, a social network that grew out of a need for people to share content that they were sensitive to being stored or archived (e.g. NSFW, sexting, etc.). Even as SnapChat evolved towards Stories and a Discover area where the brands live, users are still never more than a friend approval away from a barrage of dick pics.
